Move beyond Indian cricket… here comes tennis, football and kabaddi

I n a country where the national game is not cricket but hockey, it is ironical to see that the millions of Indian citizens live, breathe, eat and drink cricket and cricket only. Be it any format, test, one day 40 over or the recent hyped t20 , Indians just love to watch cricket and worship Sachin, Dhoni, Sehwag alongwith their religious gods. In such a situation, it is sad to see other sports losing out on the limelight and attention which they truly deserve. For, no sport is easy to play and for players to groom and be able to win medals and trophies for India, the players/athletes desperately need the support and assistance of the sports authorities, the government and the various political and bureaucratic people involved. However, the recent performance of the Indian teams/athletes and sportspersons in the Asian Games 2014 held in Korea with a total medal tally of 57 is a boost for the other aspiring sports lovers in the country. Besides, recently there have been three i

WORLD CUP FEVER 2014

w orld cup fever 2014... The much awaited football world cup 2014 has begun with a fantastic response from fans all over the world, some unwanted controversies, and tons of shocks and surprises. The 2014 FIFA World Cup is the 20th FIFA World Cup, a tournament for the men's football world championship that is currently taking place in Brazil. The arrival in Brazil this year of more than 200,000 Spanish-speaking fans, for the FIFA World Cup, from large nations like Mexico and Colombia and smaller ones like Costa Rica and Uruguay exemplifies one of Latin America's most profound shifts since the start of the century: the rise of the middle class. As per news reports, fans are sleeping on buses, staying in hotels or on cruise ships, or simply bedding down in vehicles near Rio de Janeiro's beaches. But whether they are inside Brazil's new stadiums or simply at the celebrations on the streets, many of the Brazilians and their neighbors visiting here for the World Cup are
in memory of someone.... This one is a tribute for my friend, for someone who went away unexepected and went away too soon for us colleagues to realise. For someone who had so much of life ahead of him, but who unfortunately left without saying goodbye to all of us, without saying anything to us. I had been thinking of writing for him, about him a long time, but everytime I tried to pen down my thoughts, words somehow failed me. Trust me this wasn’t easy, It took me almost an year but finally I took it upon and felt this would be an ideal time as its been one year since he left all of us.  It was the same month of march one year back, the colourful festival of holi ,with everyone in the festival mood. While each of us here was making plans of how to celebrate the festival with joy and sweets, he was fighting the biggest battle of his life in a small room in a hospital in Mumbai.  We were getting regular updates about him since he had left town for his treatment. I guess deep down
